Main features of the USBF technology

1) Fluidized bed filtration (USBF)
Simple sedimentation, the most common method of treated water separation from the activated sludge, requires large tanks, is slow and its efficiency is very low. The fluidized bed filter technology has much higher efficiency then the simple sedimentation, the fluidized bed filtration effect is utilized in the separation bioreactor zone. Through a specially designed slot made close to the bottom the treated water mixed with activated sludge biomass enters the separation zone. The suspension flows towards the outflow throughs on the surface. The flocular activated sludge particles are decelerated by the gravity force and mutual interactions and at the same their size grows. These particles create the flocular bed, which the running water flows through. The bed filters even the finest impurities. If the flakes are too large and heavy, they fall to the bottom, from where they are sucked away and returned back to the start of the process of treatment.

2) High activated sludge concentration
Efficiency of treatment depends, including but not limited to, on activated sludge quantities in the process of treatment. Activated sludge is the mix of microorganisms utilizing the substances, representing waste water pollution, for their life and development. The conventional technologies work with the medium activated sludge concentration, because the inadequately efficient simple sedimentation does not enable perfect separation from the treated water. By utilizing the fluidized bed filter effect, the USBF technology can work in the high activated sludge concentration zone. The higher the concentration, the better the results of the treatment process.

3) All processes are integrated in a single tank - bioreactor
The conventional WWTP technologies utilize a special tank for each step of the process of treatment. Thanks to the fluidized bed filter effect the USBF technology enables to unify all these steps into a single tank. Special internals made of stainless steel and/or plastics divide the bioreactor into the denitrification, nitrification and separation zones. The denitrification zone can be equipped with the sand trap and/or the sludge thickener.
